30A Vacation Planning Guide for Families — Everything You Need to Know

There's a stretch of Florida coastline that families keep coming back to, year after year, like it has some kind of hold on them. It's not the biggest beach destination in the state. It's not the loudest. But Scenic Highway 30A has something that most Florida beach towns can't compete with and once you experience it, you'll understand why families plan their entire summer around it.

This guide was written by locals who know the 30A corridor well. Whether it's your first trip or your fifth, here's everything you need to plan a family vacation that actually delivers.

What Is 30A and Why Do Families Love It?

Florida's Scenic Highway 30A is a 24-mile stretch of coastal road running through a string of small beach communities along the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle. It sits in Walton County, just east of Destin, and is home to some of the most photographed beaches in the South.

What sets 30A apart from other Florida beach destinations:

The water. The Gulf along 30A is an almost unreal shade of emerald green, and the sand is powder-white and cool to the touch even in summer. This isn't an accident the sand is made of quartz crystal that washed down from the Appalachian Mountains thousands of years ago.

The towns. Instead of one long strip of hotels and chain restaurants, 30A is made up of distinct, walkable beach communities like Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Alys Beach, WaterColor, Grayton Beach, and more… each with its own personality and charm.

The pace. It's slow. Intentionally slow. Families come here to actually unplug, walk everywhere, eat good food, and spend long days on the beach without feeling like they're in the middle of a theme park.

The Best Beach Towns Along 30A for Families

Rosemary Beach

Rosemary Beach is one of the most visually stunning communities on the entire Gulf Coast. Built around a traditional town square, it features white and cream architecture, cobblestone streets, and a boardwalk that leads straight to the beach. It's walkable, beautiful, and endlessly photogenic. Families love it for the community pool, the close-knit feel, and the incredible restaurants within walking distance. If you're looking for a home base that feels like a real neighborhood, Rosemary Beach is hard to beat.

Seaside, Florida

You may have seen Seaside without knowing it but it was the setting for The Truman Show, and it looks exactly as charming in person as it does on screen. Pastel cottages, an outdoor amphitheater, food trucks, boutique shops, and one of the best beaches on 30A. Seaside is lively and family-friendly with a farmers market, outdoor concerts, and lots of activities for kids. If you want your vacation to feel like summer camp for the whole family, this is your town.

Alys Beach

Alys Beach is perhaps the most architecturally distinct community on 30A…all gleaming white buildings, courtyard gardens, and quiet, car-free streets. It has a more upscale, resort-like feel and attracts families who want a quieter, more refined beach experience. The pool complex is stunning and the beach access is never crowded. It's a particularly beautiful place for photos, the white buildings against the blue sky and green water create a backdrop unlike anywhere else on the Gulf.

WaterColor

WaterColor is a resort community nestled between Western Lake and the Gulf, with lush greenery, wooden boardwalks, and a beautiful beach club. It's a favorite for families who like the feel of a full resort like pools, a beach club, kayaking on the lake, while still having easy access to the rest of 30A. The vibe is relaxed and green in a way that feels different from the stark white architecture of some other communities.

When Is the Best Time to Visit 30A With Family?

June through August is peak season — warm water, long days, and every restaurant and beach shop open. The water temperature sits comfortably in the low-to-mid 80s, making it perfect for kids. The tradeoff is crowds and higher rental prices. If you're going in summer, book everything, including your photographer…months in advance.

May and September are the sweet spots for families who have flexibility. The water is still warm, the crowds are noticeably thinner, and you'll pay less for vacation rentals. May especially has become increasingly popular with families who can pull kids out of school a week early. September is arguably the most beautiful month on 30A…warm afternoons, dramatic skies, and the beaches practically to yourself after Labor Day.

October surprises a lot of first-timers. The water is still warm enough to swim through most of the month, the light is golden and gorgeous, and the pace slows to something that feels almost magical. Fall on 30A has a devoted following for good reason.

Spring Break (March–April) brings crowds, but the atmosphere is festive and the weather is usually gorgeous. Water temperatures are cooler… upper 60s to low 70s… so some kids will swim and some won't. It's a great time to visit if your family is more about the atmosphere and activities than living in the water.

What to Pack for a 30A Family Vacation

Beyond the usual beach gear, a few things make a difference on 30A specifically:

A wagon or beach cart. Most 30A beach communities require a short walk from parking to the sand, sometimes several blocks. A collapsible wagon with big wheels is worth every penny.

Reef-safe sunscreen. Not just because it's better for the environment, but because 30A families tend to use it and it's harder to find in stores here.

A light layer for evenings. Even in summer, 30A evenings can be surprisingly breezy, especially near the water. A lightweight wrap or linen shirt keeps everyone comfortable for dinner.

Neutral outfits for photos. If there's any chance you're scheduling a beach session — and there should be — pack a coordinated set of outfits in soft neutrals: cream, white, tan, dusty blue. The 30A backdrop is so beautiful that simple, coordinated colors photograph like a magazine shoot. Skip bright patterns and neon. You'll thank yourself later.

Don't Forget to Book Your Beach Photography Session

Here's the thing about family vacations: everyone means to capture the good moments, and then the week flies by and what you have is a bunch of iPhone screenshots and a few blurry candids.Families who visit 30A and book a professional beach session almost universally say the same thing, it's the thing they're most glad they did. The photos become the thing on the wall. The photos become what the kids ask to look at years later. The beaches along 30A are genuinely extraordinary backdrops, and sunset along this stretch of coastline is some of the most beautiful light you'll find anywhere on the Gulf Coast. A good photographer knows exactly where to be and when and how to get real smiles and genuine moments out of even the most camera-shy family members.Sessions along 30A fill up fast, especially in summer. If your trip is in June, July, or August, you'll want to book at least 2–3 months in advance. Many families book for the following summer before they even leave for home.

A Few Local Tips Before You Go…

Eat at the food trucks in Seaside. The Airstream food truck park at Seaside is a 30A institution. Grab a fish taco and a fresh-squeezed lemonade and eat on the grass. It's one of those things that becomes a family tradition.

Get up for sunrise at least once. 30A sunrises don't get nearly as much attention as the sunsets, but they're extraordinary — quiet beaches, pink skies, and cool sand. Even if you're not booking a sunrise photo session, do it once for yourself.

Check the beach access points before you go. Each community has specific public beach access points, and some are easier than others with kids and gear. Look up your specific rental's nearest access before your first beach day.

Make a reservation. The best restaurants on 30A — particularly in Rosemary Beach and Seaside — book out weeks in advance in peak season. Don't wait until you're hungry.

Drive the whole road. 30A is 24 miles long. Drive it end to end at least once. Stop at the communities you haven't visited. Pull over when something looks beautiful. That's the whole point.
